In the Indoor Archery World Cup Stage 2 held in Bangkok, third-seeded Deepika Kumari was the lone medal winner from India. She won a bronze in the women’s recurve individual event which she claimed by defeating 13th-seeded Sayana Tsyrempilova of Russia 7-3.
It was, however, not easy to adjust to a completely different format at such a short notice as the archers were made to shoot 18-metre, rather than 70m outdoor targets, while the size of the targets were also reduced from 122cm outdoors to 40cm for the indoor event.
The Jharkhand archer got past her teammates Nivetha Ganesan 6-0, Laishram Bombayla Devi 7-3 and Ankita Bhakat – who had ousted her in the Asian meet last week – 6-2 to make the last-four stage.
But Deepika, who qualified third with 582 points, failed once she came up against a foreign rival and lost 5-6 to Korean second seed Kim Surin.
