There seems no ease despite being a week after Prime Minster Narendra Modi announced demonetization of old 500 and 1000 Rs notes as an act to end the major black money issue faced in India. While majority of the nation has supported the move, citizens, especially women, claim that proper planning would have ensured less chaos which public are facing.
“As the announcement was made during the first week of the month, most of the women were adversely affected as we generally do our financial planning for the whole month. We are now worried that if the situation persists how will we manage the coming month as the government has not only kept limits on exchanging the old notes but has also put a bar on withdrawals?” says Pooja Prasad from Chennai.
Roopali Dasgupta from Mumbai who is busy, preparing for her brother’s wedding, is clueless as to how to take things forward. “The wedding is just fortnight away and with the announcement many preparations have come to a standstill. Luckily, we have made payments for the marriage hall, catering services etc. however there are many things still left to do which we thought we would complete by month end. This announcement has adversely affected us as now we are unable to make payments,” asserts Roopali.
Asha Bhalerao, a domestic helper from Navi Mumbai, is very happy with the move. She has received salary of 6 months in advance. “ I just earn Rs. 10,000 per month and 6 months advance means 60,000 which is a good amount for me. This will help me a lot as not only I will earn on interest on the advance payment but will not have funds shortage,” she says beamingly.
However, majority of the women feel that rather than complaining, the citizens should find solutions to support Prime Minister. “If we have to buy anything or order food, we can do it online. There may be inconvenience, however, we should look in terms of long term benefit this move will have for the entire nation,” says Bhagyashree Desai from Mumbai.
