There are frequent queries by many of my patients if carrots can be consumed by diabetic patients. My answer to this is- Yes, of course! You can consume carrots because they are rich in antioxidants which have a protective as well as a preventive effect for diabetes. Furthermore, in the olden diabetic diets, carrots were considered as starchy and sugary and were completely avoided in a diabetic’s diet planning but as of now, carbohydrate counting and glycemic index foods are considered as more valuable parameters for diabetic diet planning and to be precise, 100 grams of carrot has around 11 grams of carbohydrate, and even though if you feel the carbohydrate content of carrot is more, let me assure you that carrot has the highest amount of total dietary fibre which is actually beneficial for diabetic individuals when compared with other starchy vegetables.
So if you are a diabetic craving for carrot and have been avoiding it for a long time, let me tell you that yes you can consume carrots in “Limited quantities” along with plenty other fibre-rich vegetables to control your blood sugar levels. So all my curious readers, carrot and diabetes can be good friends! And in case if you all still have any nutrition queries, feel free to comment below and I will answer all your queries soon.
